Abstract:
A 40-year-old man was administered to our hospital with a complaint of left flank pain. Computed tomography revealed a homogenous solid mass, 6 x 5 x 6 cm in diameter , situated between left Th12-L1 intervertebral foramen and upper pole of the left kidney with a root inside a spinal canal. It was suspected to be a benign retroperitoneal neurofibroma ( Schwanoma). We performed a transperitoneal laparoscopic resection of the tumor. The operation and postoperative course was without any complication . The patient was discharged on the fourth postoperative day without any neurologic disfunction.
Pathological diagnosis of the surgical specimen was neurofibroma, the specimen was removed without residue.
Control MR scans one and twelve months after surgery showed no residual tumor ..
By reviewing current literature only seven other cases of laparoscopic surgery for Schwanoma have been published at this time , this one being specific for root deep inside spinal canal.
